Traditionally marking the day that Guy Fawkes’ attempt to blow up the Houses of Parlimaent was foiled and thus burned at the stake (hence why we have a Guy to place on the bonfire), the celebrations have expanded to be more modern and relevant to today’s audiences; sparklers are available in abundance, fireworks are becoming increasingly colourful and exotic, and people are looking for new ways to enjoy the evening. Chinese lanterns can add something incredibly magical to any bonfire night celebration, and fit in perfectly with the theme of light and colour; no one need settle for our plain white lanterns-although they are always stunning-if they desire a more colourful effect; we stock a range of shades and tones.
We ourselves will also be out and about at our local displays, performing demonstrations of our lanterns and other related products, so if you live in South London, keep an eye out for us!
As always on November 5th, please keep safe by wearing gloves, keeping children away from fireworks, and staying at a distance from any flames. We hope you have a great night!

With tonnes of restaurants, shops and supermarkets, you’ll find whatever delight you’re seeking out in this pocket of culture in London. It’s not only the food and souvenirs which make this area completely delightful; Chinese lanterns, streamers and fixed lights adorn the pedestrian areas all year round, not just during the huge celebrations of the New Year in the Chinese calendar.
Around the middle of February is when the new year usually falls, and the streets play host to massive parties and a carnival throughout the days and nights that follow. The instantly recognisable Chinese dragon parades through the crowds, bowing and raising its head in a traditional dance, money is given to children in red (the colour of luck and prosperity) envelopes, and fortune cookies are cracked open in hope of bringing good will to ones self by doing so.
This year we’ll be heading down to China town to see the Chinese lanterns for ourselves-maybe we’ll see you there! Or if you have any photos or stories from a time you’ve visited during a previous year, we’d love you to share them with us. We hope to hear from you soon.

Along the same lines, we’ve been finding out about exotic locations for weddings, and have come across the possibility of getting hitched in the arctic, or somewhere equally chilly. There are numerous wedding packages available for those who desire a cooler climate, surrounded by snow and the wonderful silence that comes with being in a cold, remote place. Just imagine how beautiful Chinese lanterns would look floating above this landscape, the snow reflecting their light, and, if you so choose to use coloured lanterns, the rainbow of beauty that would become part of your special day. In some arctic climates, moonlight is rare, with twenty four hours of sunlight throughout the ‘summer’ season. All the more time to dance into the small hours, without the sensation of time slipping away from you on your special day, and more time to gather your friends and family around for a wonderful Chinese lanterns release.
If you have been lucky enough to get hitched in an exotic location, please do get in touch and let us know about it-we always love hearing your stories and seeing your photographs! We look forward to hearing from you.

There are lots of pros to this idea, we’re sure you’ll agree, such as the much more likely hot weather, being able to enjoy stunning beaches and beautiful blue seas, and the feeling of getting away from it all to be with the one you love. One of the most popular destinations for beach weddings is Thailand, with its selection of idyllic islands on which there is peace and calm to be found. If you’re heading to this unique country and climate to get hitched, why not join in Thai tradition and release Chinese lanterns at your wedding reception; the lanterns can be seen to be released en masse throughout Asia during Chinese New Year, full moon parties, and other celebrations, as they are believed to be a symbol of good luck, hope and prosperity. All things you would wish for on your special day, we’re sure you’ll agree.
If you have any queries about our wedding packages, please do get in touch and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Instead of containing an Olympic torch flame, the lanterns have inside them more environmentally friendly LED lights, further pushing home the messages that are written all over the lanterns themselves.
The “forest”, so called because of the sheer numbers of the Chinese lanterns, also known as Lunar Lanterns in Vancouver, are being used to remind the population that the Olympics are not only about competing to win at an extremely high level, but also about appreciating art, culture and celebration, as well as promoting green messages whenever possible.
If you have any questions about our products, please do get in touch and we’ll be happy to answer any queries you might have. Of course, we also love to hear from you if you’ve seen Chinese lanterns in abundance anywhere in the world, and always appreciate you sharing your pictures with us.

Yuan Xiao, literally translated as “Night of the first lunar month” is the first night of the year to see a full moon, and the party gets going in a big way. Traditional white Chinese lanterns, as well as lanterns shaped as animals and those embellished with writing, detailing good wishes and will for prosperity and luck, are released in their thousands all over the country. This time is a great family occasion, with paper lanterns also being hung outside homes for friends and neighbours to appreciate.
Whilst there are various theories on the origins of the festival, most are agreed that the main ethos is to bring people together in appreciation of family and friends. One legend tells of how Qinshihuang, the first emperor to unite China, ordered celebrations every year to appease Taivi, the God of Heaven, and who had the power to inflict drought, famine or pestilence upon the human race. During the first festivals, Qinshihuang would ask Taivi to bring favorable weather and good health to himself and the people he ruled over.

Backpackers aplenty can be found wandering the shores in search of said celebration, which was founded in honour of, well, a beautiful moon that a group of travellers once thought deserved recognition and remembering for decades to come. The clue is in the question, somewhat. On the night of a full moon party, fluorescent face paint is cracked out, fireworks set off, fires lit, and of course lots of Chinese lanterns released. The incredibly social atmosphere makes for a perfect location and environment for them to be released- as soon as one person lights one, everyone else wants to have a hand in making a spectacular display happen. There is of course more than one opportunity for these displays to take place, with the parties lasting for hours- why take the initiative next full moon party and get yourself involved in the joy of bringing people together with Chinese lanterns?!
As with any event of this kind, we always recommend taking care, going with a group of friends and looking after each other during the night.

Families and friends gather to rejoice throughout the day on this public holiday, with towns and villages often hosting events that all residents can attend together. We’ve also heard reports of our very own Chinese lanterns being involved in the festivities, as citizens of the states give thanks for, and reflect on another year of Independence and freedom that has passed and that they have been lucky enough to be a part of. If you have any stories from a July 4th celebration that you’ve attended, or maybe you hosted, then we’d love to hear from you. Maybe you’re travelling to America this summer to witness it first hand and would like to take something with you to make your trip extra special…look no further than our Chinese lanterns, which are sure to impress anyone. We’re all for celebrating freedom, so unleash your inner patriot and join in the party this year- we definitely think a day like this is relevant for everyone to appreciate the world we live in.

Schools pile on the work and pressure of doing exceptionally well, and it can be extremely difficult to keep a cool head (something which really helps with performing one’s best, we’re sure you’ll agree). If you’re looking for a unique and special way to support your friends and family at this stressful time, why not involve them in a Chinese lanterns release, during which you can join together in wishing for their good fortune and strength to do their best under pressure. The party atmosphere will help take their mind off everything else that’s going on for a while, and thus leave them refreshed and able to take in more when they next settle down to study. And all the other guests get to have a lovely sociable time- everyone wins! When the results come in and they’ve passed with flying colours, invest in some more “flying colours” with our coloured Chinese lanterns in celebration of their achievement.

Musicians gather to entertain the crowds, and a great sense of community is reported every time this event occurs. 2010 summer solstice will fall on the 21st June; why not plan to make your mark at this momentous occasion, and take some Chinese lanterns to release during the sunrise, or indeed at the end of the day when the sun goes down? The classic white lanterns look stunning against a summer sky as the light arrives or fades, and can really help add to the magic of the occasion. In our experience, Chinese lanterns are also a great conversation starter, and you’ll have people flocking around you, wanting to be part of the release. A lovely way to make new friends!
If you have any images or stories from a solstice celebration in a previous year, please do get in touch and share them with us. We always love hearing from you, particularly lovely occasions where our products have been put to good use, and who knows, your contribution may even be chosen to be included in a future blog.
