We at Chinese lanterns have been known to be something of a globe-trotting bunch; Tom recently took some time out to travel in the United States, Ed journeyed to Nepal in September to help locals tackle Everest, and Patrick has recently returned from Thailand. All in all, we love seeing the world and learning about other cultures. We have often thought of taking our very own Chinese lanterns to see how they fit into and how they would look at famous locations around the globe, and would love to hear from any of our customers who may have had similar ideas. Have you been aboard, taking lanterns with you, and released them over an iconic skyline or near a famous monument or statue? Chinese lanterns hang in Vancouver

Ahead of the 2010 winter Olympics, the streets of Vancouver have been adorned with Chinese lanterns, which display messages of good will and hope for multiculturalism and diversity in the Canadian city, as well words of encouragement for energy saving and sustaining our expendable resources. Instead of containing an Olympic torch flame, the lanterns have inside them more environmentally friendly LED lights, further pushing home the messages that are written all over the lanterns themselves.
The “forest”, so called because of the sheer numbers of the Chinese lanterns, also known as Lunar Lanterns in Vancouver, are being used to remind the population that the Olympics are not only about competing to win at an extremely high level, but also about appreciating art, culture and celebration, as well as promoting green messages whenever possible.

HSBC bank on Chinese lanterns

We love standing on the platform of the tube and watching those super TV billboards, with moving adverts on for our viewing pleasure whilst we wait for our train. We particularly love the stunning new HSBC advert, featuring Chinese lanterns, filmed during New Year’s celebrations in Shanghai, when the sky is filled with the lanterns released by people making all sorts of wishes, usually for health, wealth and luck throughout the next twelve months.
The bank have taken this idea to help us understand that they too wish for our prosperity, and will certainly be wishing us financial growth for many years to come (particularly if we bank with them, we’re sure).

Chinese lanterns at the Yuan Xiao festival

On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the Chinese nation hold a lantern festival to mark the end of a series of celebrations for Chinese New Year. Yuan Xiao, literally translated as “Night of the first lunar month” is the first night of the year to see a full moon, and the party gets going in a big way. Traditional white Chinese lanterns, as well as lanterns shaped as animals and those embellished with writing, detailing good wishes and will for prosperity and luck, are released in their thousands all over the country. This time is a great family occasion, with paper lanterns also being hung outside homes for friends and neighbours to appreciate.
Whilst there are various theories on the origins of the festival, most are agreed that the main ethos is to bring people together in appreciation of family and friends. One legend tells of how Qinshihuang, the first emperor to unite China, ordered celebrations every year to appease Taivi, the God of Heaven, and who had the power to inflict drought, famine or pestilence upon the human race. During the first festivals, Qinshihuang would ask Taivi to bring favorable weather and good health to himself and the people he ruled over.

There’s new craze that’s about town, and we’ve got to admit, we’re jumping right on the bandwagon with this one. Being good to the environment is all the rage- we’re talking about recycling, using public transport or car shares to get from A to B, and maybe even saving up your banana skins and apple cores to make a nice bit of compost for the garden. We love to think we do our bit at home by involving ourselves in things like these, and now we’re doing the same in the office. Our new eco Chinese lanterns are perfect for those who want to have something special at their gathering or event, without worrying about the lasting effects of their display of lanterns. This lot are made using a light but durable bamboo frame and lovely rice paper to complete the picture. Not only this, but the fuel cell holder, usually made with wire, has been replaced fire-proof wool; all of the aforementioned will biodegrade in a very short time after your Chinese lanterns have burnt out.

Chinese lanterns vs. Shakespeare

We at Wishlantern love all things magical, particularly when they’re recorded in such distinguished works such as those penned by our very own Will Shakespeare. One of our favourite works is the classic summer spectacular “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, which follows the tale of four young people, who become the subjects of pranks played by woodland fairies, and thus end up having a whole lot of kerfuffle around their romantic inclinations towards each other. The lovers run around falling in love with each other, although not exactly how they planned it, and it all accumulates in everything being sorted out just as it should be, with a massive party being held at the palace, whilst various mechanicals put on a silly play to entertain then. Good old Will.
If, like us, you’re not as lucky as Helena, Hermia, Demetrius and Lysander, and need a little more than magical fairies to make your romantic wishes come true, why not invest in some Chinese lanterns, pen your deepest desires onto them, and release them in hope of someone answering your prayers. Chinese lanterns at the Full Moon Party

Every year, thousands of tourists flock to the beautiful beaches in Thailand in search of sun, sea, stunning people and wild parties- and they’re not disappointed. Backpackers aplenty can be found wandering the shores in search of said celebration, which was founded in honour of, well, a beautiful moon that a group of travellers once thought deserved recognition and remembering for decades to come. The clue is in the question, somewhat. On the night of a full moon party, fluorescent face paint is cracked out, fireworks set off, fires lit, and of course lots of Chinese lanterns released. The incredibly social atmosphere makes for a perfect location and environment for them to be released- as soon as one person lights one, everyone else wants to have a hand in making a spectacular display happen. There is of course more than one opportunity for these displays to take place, with the parties lasting for hours- why take the initiative next full moon party and get yourself involved in the joy of bringing people together with Chinese lanterns?!
As with any event of this kind, we always recommend taking care, going with a group of friends and looking after each other during the night.

When you wish upon Chinese lanterns…

We at wish lantern, funnily enough, love making wishes, and like to do all sorts of things to ensure the best odds of them coming true. We keep them secret, we keep our fingers crossed, and we try and blow out all the candles at once. We also have various releases of Chinese lanterns to speed things along a bit if they don’t seem to be going according to plan.
Wishing on a star is also a popular method, first made famous by the wonderful animated film Pinocchio. If it was good enough for Jiminy Cricket, it’s good enough for us. It has got us thinking though, with all those stars being so far away, how can we guarantee that our hard wishing will actually amount to anything. We reckon that were Jiminy himself around in 2010, his preferred method or wishing would almost certainly be with Chinese lanterns- a much more practical and certain way of ensuring wealth, posterity, health, happiness, or whatever else you might like to wish for. Who knows, if there ever comes to be a remake of our favourite classic about a wooden boy, the small insect sidekick might have very different ideas about how to make your dreams come true…

Chinese lanterns at July 4th Celebrations

Every year, on July 4^th, fireworks and celebration erupt all over the United States of America, as the population observe the day that the country declared independence from the UK, all those years ago in 1776. Families and friends gather to rejoice throughout the day on this public holiday, with towns and villages often hosting events that all residents can attend together. We’ve also heard reports of our very own Chinese lanterns being involved in the festivities, as citizens of the states give thanks for, and reflect on another year of Independence and freedom that has passed and that they have been lucky enough to be a part of. If you have any stories from a July 4^th celebration that you’ve attended, or maybe you hosted, then we’d love to hear from you.
