Do you remember Watch with Mother, that classic TV show of the 1950s, with Andy Pandy, and the lady with a sausage dog who just happened to be an expert at making Chinese lanterns? We do, and in celebration of this genious programme, we thought we’d write their ‘how to’ of making hanging Chinese lanterns, so you can enjoy constructing them at home.
1) Take a piece of coloured paper, and fold in half. Cut slits into the paper, from the side where the edges meet, so the slits nearly meet the fold but not quite.
2) Unfold the paper, and glue the two edges together so that the lantern can stand upright, with the slits running vertically.
3) Push the top of the lantern down very gently to make the sides puff out, and attach a strip of paper at the top so that you can hold or hang it as you please. Voila! Your very own homemade Chinese lantern. Be careful though, as these lanterns are not suitable for lighting or putting candles inside; never fear, they look great just on their own.
Why not make a whole collection of colours? A great way to decorate or brighten a room for any occasion.
