Distress Flares could be Chinese lanterns

In Northern New Zealand, police are receiving a number of calls from concerned memberdistress flares in NZ might be chinese lanternss of the public who mistakenly believe they’re witness to distress flares being released over the country. It has become such a problem, and of course a waste of valuable police time and resources, that Inspector Burdett, from the Northern Communication Centre, has issued a special statement describing the difference between the flares and Chinese lanterns, urging the population to take a moment to differentiate between the two, before calling the emergency number. Whilst distress flares give off a deep, intense red glow, and slowly descend from above over forty to sixty seconds, Chinese lanterns are a much softer, orangey colour, remaining the air for several minutes, before dropping rather rapidly once the fuel cell has burnt out. Burdett goes on to say that whilst the police department have no intention of deterring calls that require genuine assistance, they need the public to work with them on this issue.
